E-MTB Categories Explained

Electric mountain bikes mirror their acoustic counterparts, with options from lightweight XC to burly enduro. The motor adds climbing capability; the bike design determines descending character.

E-MTB categories:

  • Lightweight e-MTB: Under 20kg, smaller batteries, subtle assistance. For riders wanting just a boost.
  • E-hardtail: Front suspension only, great value and versatility for easier trails.
  • E-trail: 140-150mm travel, balanced capability. The sweet spot for most riders.
  • E-enduro: 160-170mm travel, built for descending. Shuttling without the shuttle.

Motor Systems

Leading e-MTB motors include Bosch, Shimano, Brose, and Specialized's own systems. Each has characteristics in power delivery, noise, and integration. Battery sizes typically range from 500Wh to 750Wh, with range extender options.

Why Buy Used?

E-MTBs carry premium prices due to motor and battery technology. The used market offers substantial savings on recent-model bikes with healthy batteries and proven reliability.
